Frequently asked Questions and Answer

Q:  I would like to go to work, I’m receiving SSI benefits, how will getting a job affect my Social Security Benefits?

A.  The Benefits Planning, Assistance and Outreach (BAPO) Program at the Houston Center for Independent  Living assists beneficiaries in understanding available work incentives.  They make it easier for persons with disabilities to make an informed decision regarding returning to work without fear of losing supports essential to their survival.  Click on Houston Center for Independent Living or call 713-974-4621 Voice/TTY.  The regional toll-free hotline number is 1-877-877-7082.

Q: I have recently become disabled and cannot do the work I had been doing in the past. Where can I get assistance and support to overcome my barriers to employment and return to work?

A.  Information about financial assistance for persons with disabilities preparing for entry or re-entry into the workforce is available at your local The WorkSource Career Office.

Q:  What can I do if I think my employer or supervisor is discriminating against me because of my disability?

A:  The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has a helpful fact sheet, Employment Rights, Who Has Them and Who Enforces Them, which summarizes the federal laws that prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities and provides contact information for further information and assistance.

Q:  Is there anything that my employer must provide to help me do my job and accommodate my disability?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability-related nondiscrimination laws have specific requirements regarding reasonable accommodations.  The Office of Disability Employment Policy’s Job Accommodation Network (JAN) has a wealth of information on accommodations for both employers and employees at U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy.  The toll free number is 1-800-526-7234.
