MARCH 2008 UPDATE:
NEXT UPDATE: WEEK OF May 19
March 2008 employment data was released on April 18, 2008, for the Gulf Coast region.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown MSA added 80,100 jobs in March, for an over-the-year growth rate of 3.2 percent. This was the lowest rate of growth for the month of March since 2005 when the rate was 1.9 percent. Last year at this time the area added 100,100 jobs, or 4.1 percent over the previous year. Professional & Business Services and Educational & Health Services are the two major industry groups adding the most positions, up 17,900 and 14,500 jobs respectively from March 2007. Construction added 9,300 jobs from March 2007.
The thirteen county region’s unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, the same rate as March 2007, no change.
